Women’s Self Defence at Lowton Community Hub

Feedback from our recent Women’s Self Defence course has been strong and consistent. The course was delivered by our resident partner, Kokoro Jujitsu, and ran over five weeks at the hub dojo.

The aim was simple. Help local women build confidence, raise awareness, and learn practical self-defence skills they could rely on if needed. Most attendees arrived with no previous experience and plenty of nerves. That changed quickly. The relaxed, welcoming atmosphere of the dojo helped everyone settle and focus from the first session.

Each week began with a short talk from Ian Charlson, 6th Dan Black Belt. These sessions covered preparation, personal awareness, and avoidance. The practical element followed, with clear instruction in simple, effective techniques. Skills were introduced gradually and revisited each week, allowing confidence to grow at a steady pace. Local police also attended to explain the legal aspects of self defence and personal safety.

By the final session, participants were comfortable applying what they had learned. This included defending against grabs, wall restraints, and simulated weapon threats. More importantly, they trusted their ability to stay calm and respond under pressure.

Due to the success of the course, Kokoro Jujitsu committed to running another Women’s Self Defence programme at Lowton Community Hub in Autumn. The focus remains the same. Simple techniques. Clear teaching. A safe and supportive environment.

I signed up for the 5-week women’s self-defence course feeling a bit nervous—never done anything like it before—but the coaches made it so welcoming and fun from day one. By week 5 I felt stronger and way more aware when I’m out walking alone at night. Chuffed to bits I did it—proper confidence boost for me and the other lasses in the group!
