Just as life returned, disaster struck. Extreme weather ravaged the structure—more leaks, severe damage, endless issues. Assessments confirmed the worst: unsustainable, a liability without major investment. Volunteers faced a heartbreaking reality—the doors might close forever.
The bold vision of lowton community hub
But surrender was never in their vocabulary. Instead of defeat, they ignited a bolder vision. They sketched drawings, crafted business plans, and outlined implementation for a rebuilt Lowton Community Hub: a true centre with a community coffee house, revitalised youth spaces, dementia support, world-class martial arts excellence, and healthcare services—something for everyone.
"It’s been a rollercoaster, and at times a relentless uphill struggle. There were moments when progress felt slow and the challenges heavy, but we were never doing it alone. So many people stepped forward to help, give time, and keep belief alive. I’m deeply grateful to every volunteer and supporter, and especially to Sport England, whose belief in the vision and continued backing made this ambitious project possible.” — Luke Brown
Sport England support
In a last-ditch effort, they applied to Sport England’s Community Investment Fund and secured £30,000. This enabled professional consultants for pre-feasibility and feasibility studies, refining ambitious plans. Political backing grew—Leigh MP, local councillors, even Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham voiced support. On a pivotal conference call with Wigan Council and Sport England, matched funding arrived via Section 106 contributions.
COVID-19 cast shadows, raising questions: Could volunteer expertise integrate? Would the budget hold? Would full council commitment follow?
Yet, amid uncertainty, resilience prevailed. This chapter wasn’t about easy wins—it was about refusing to let a community’s dream die. The volunteers’ unwavering hope turned crisis into catalyst, proving that when people unite for something greater, even the fiercest storms can lead to brighter dawns.
