We were proud to host the North West Area Dan Grading at Leigh Judo for the first time. The turnout made it one of the busiest and largest NW Dan gradings in the last five years and a strong way to start 2026.
Judoka travelled from across the region to take part. Our central location played a clear role in drawing people in from far and wide, making the event accessible for clubs across the North West.
A Strong Day on the Mat
Eight line-ups took place over the course of the day. Five new Dan grades were awarded, four through line-ups and one through total points. Many others picked up valuable points as they continue their journey towards Dan grade.
Every athlete who stepped on the mat showed commitment and courage. Dan gradings test more than technique. They test preparation, resilience, and the ability to perform under pressure.
The Role of the Facility
The quality and standard of our dojo played a major role in the success of the day. The space allowed the grading to run efficiently, with some competitors able to warm up in our second dojo while contests continued on the main mat. This reduced delays and helped the event flow.
Having the right environment matters at this level. Space, layout, and organisation all affect performance and experience.
People Behind the Scenes
A big thank you goes to the North West grading team and referees who ran the day so smoothly. Events like this only work because of people who give their time, knowledge, and experience behind the scenes.
We also want to recognise the Lowton Community Café team, who came in on their day off to provide breakfast and lunch. Their support added to the atmosphere and helped keep everyone fuelled throughout a long day.
Looking Ahead
We are proud to host events like this and to play an active role in the growth and development of judoka in the region. Providing opportunities, raising standards, and supporting long-term development sits close to our heart.
This grading marks the start of an annual programme of events delivered from the hub in partnership with North West Judo. This will include future Dan gradings and kata courses, all aimed at supporting players, coaches, and officials.
Thank you to everyone involved. From athletes and coaches to officials and volunteers, the day was a clear success and a strong foundation for what comes next.
"This grading reflects what is possible when people, facilities, and partnerships come together. We look forward to continuing to host events that support the growth, development, and progression of judoka across the North West.”
