Hope, Pizza and opportunity
The Slice of Hope project began with a decision to act when a once-valued community space was lost. The collapse of a neglected pensioners’ hut left behind a dangerous and derelict site, symbolising years of decline. Instead of accepting this as the end, local volunteers and residents came together with a shared belief that the space could be reclaimed. With support from the National Lottery and Wigan Council, the land was cleared, unsafe structures removed, and the foundations laid for something new.
At the heart of Slice of Hope is the transformation of overlooked materials into opportunity. Volunteers worked hands-on to repurpose old shipping containers, cutting, fitting, and building a new hub from the ground up. This practical, community-led approach reflects the core belief of the project: that regeneration works best when people shape it themselves. What once represented neglect now stands as a symbol of effort, ownership, and pride.
Building Futures Where Others Saw Failure
Skills, support, and shared space creating opportunity for young people and the wider community.
Slice of Hope is about creating futures, not just fixing spaces. The project provides a platform for young people not in education, employment, or training to gain skills, qualifications, and real experience in a structured, supportive environment.
Alongside this, the surrounding outdoor space supports workshops, training, and community events that bring people together. Slice of Hope shows how local action can turn loss into opportunity and rebuild a sense of purpose for generations to come.
